SUMMARY:Seong-Jin Cho\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Chopin\, Janáček and Ravel \n\n\n\nThe young South Korean pianist\, who has recently recorded the four Scherzi\, won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015 and now enjoys a flourishing recital and concert career. Among critical reactions to his playing\, that of the Wall Street Journal is typical. ‘Cho is a master. He displayed an impressive variety of tonal colour and a remarkable technique\, dispatched with jaw-dropping panache’.

SUMMARY:Mahan Esfahani\, harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Bach: Before and After\n\n\n\nEvery great composer is influenced by his or her predecessors and in turn influences others. One of the great exponents of the harpsichord reveals Bach’s own lineage in works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621)\, Hans Leo Hässler (1564-1612)\, Samuel Scheidt (1587-1664)\, Bach’s cousin Johann Christoph (1642-1703)\, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706)\, and Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722)\, and the continuation of elements of his style within the works of his sons Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-84) and Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-88).

SUMMARY:Khatia Buniatishvili
DESCRIPTION:Come for the fireworks\, stay for the poetry: pianist Khatia Buniatishvili brings her barnstorming technique and thoughtful musicality to music from great Baroque and Romantic masters. \n\n\n\nSome pianists just attract superlatives. With ‘jaw-dropping virtuoso technique’ (Evening Standard) and a habit of causing a sensation\, the Georgian’s showstopping\, outrageous brilliance has to be seen to be believed. \n\n\n\nBut there is far more to Buniatishvili’s artistry than the reputation that precedes her. Discover the ‘pianist of extremes’ (Gramophone)\, as she takes us on a whirlwind journey from the introspection of Bach to the drama of Liszt. And with Satie at his most atmospheric and Couperin at his most haunting\, you can prepare to be moved by Buniatishvili’s musicality. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nEric Satie Gymnopédie No 1Frédéric Chopin Prélude No 4\, Op 28György Ligeti No 5 ‘Arc-En-Ciel’ from Études for Piano (Book 1)Frédéric Chopin Scherzo No 3 in C-sharp minor\, Op 39

SUMMARY:Benjamin Grosvenor\, piano | Hyeyoon Park\, violin | Timothy Ridout\, viola | Kian Soltani\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Mahler\, Schumann and Strauss \n\n\n\nThe Artist in Residence and his three string playing colleagues select sizable works from the piano quartet repertoire. Representing his only surviving chamber composition\, Mahler’s early single movement (1876) dates from his period as a student at the Vienna Conservatoire. Another early work\, in this case revealing the influence of Brahms on the young composer’s idiom\, Strauss’s full-scale quartet (1885) was sadly almost the composer’s last for chamber forces.

SUMMARY:Sergei Babayan\, piano @ Wigmore Hall
DESCRIPTION:In the first of his appearances this season Sergei Babayan takes on the challenge of the first 24 Preludes and Fugues of Bach’s 48. The pianist’s own fascination with Bach’s music led him to study with the great Bach authority and conductor Helmuth Rilling. Of his interpretations of the composer\, The Scotsman wrote: ‘One would be hard put to it to name a Bach interpreter of his standing today. His performance has a tonal spectrum many orchestras would envy’. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJohann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) \n\n\n\nThe Well-tempered Clavier Book I

SUMMARY:Leif Ove Andsnes piano; Christian Tetzlaff violin @ Wigmore Hall
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating with a regular pianist partner\, the German violinist’s residency opens with a recital ranging from Dvořák’s late-Romanticism to the modernism of Bartók and Lutosławski. The former’s masterpiece was written for Jelly d’Arányi\, and premièred by her and the composer in London in 1922. Of tonight’s performers’ recording of the piece\, the BBC’s Andrew McGregor wrote: ‘As a duo they’re breathtaking\, with Tetzlaff soaring sweetly over Bartók’s gritty piano part’. \n\n\n\nWitold Lutosławski (1913-1994) \n\n\n\nPartita for violin and piano \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAntonín Dvořák (1841-1904) \n\n\n\nViolin Sonata in F Op. 57 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nINTERVAL \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBéla Bartók (1881-1945) \n\n\n\nViolin Sonata No. 1 BB84
