SUMMARY:Seong-Jin Cho\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Chopin\, Janáček and Ravel \n\n\n\nThe young South Korean pianist\, who has recently recorded the four Scherzi\, won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015 and now enjoys a flourishing recital and concert career. Among critical reactions to his playing\, that of the Wall Street Journal is typical. ‘Cho is a master. He displayed an impressive variety of tonal colour and a remarkable technique\, dispatched with jaw-dropping panache’.

SUMMARY:Mahan Esfahani\, harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Bach: Before and After\n\n\n\nEvery great composer is influenced by his or her predecessors and in turn influences others. One of the great exponents of the harpsichord reveals Bach’s own lineage in works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621)\, Hans Leo Hässler (1564-1612)\, Samuel Scheidt (1587-1664)\, Bach’s cousin Johann Christoph (1642-1703)\, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706)\, and Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722)\, and the continuation of elements of his style within the works of his sons Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-84) and Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-88).

SUMMARY:Khatia Buniatishvili
DESCRIPTION:Come for the fireworks\, stay for the poetry: pianist Khatia Buniatishvili brings her barnstorming technique and thoughtful musicality to music from great Baroque and Romantic masters. \n\n\n\nSome pianists just attract superlatives. With ‘jaw-dropping virtuoso technique’ (Evening Standard) and a habit of causing a sensation\, the Georgian’s showstopping\, outrageous brilliance has to be seen to be believed. \n\n\n\nBut there is far more to Buniatishvili’s artistry than the reputation that precedes her. Discover the ‘pianist of extremes’ (Gramophone)\, as she takes us on a whirlwind journey from the introspection of Bach to the drama of Liszt. And with Satie at his most atmospheric and Couperin at his most haunting\, you can prepare to be moved by Buniatishvili’s musicality. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nEric Satie Gymnopédie No 1Frédéric Chopin Prélude No 4\, Op 28György Ligeti No 5 ‘Arc-En-Ciel’ from Études for Piano (Book 1)Frédéric Chopin Scherzo No 3 in C-sharp minor\, Op 39

SUMMARY:Benjamin Grosvenor\, piano | Hyeyoon Park\, violin | Timothy Ridout\, viola | Kian Soltani\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Mahler\, Schumann and Strauss \n\n\n\nThe Artist in Residence and his three string playing colleagues select sizable works from the piano quartet repertoire. Representing his only surviving chamber composition\, Mahler’s early single movement (1876) dates from his period as a student at the Vienna Conservatoire. Another early work\, in this case revealing the influence of Brahms on the young composer’s idiom\, Strauss’s full-scale quartet (1885) was sadly almost the composer’s last for chamber forces.

SUMMARY:Sergei Babayan\, piano @ Wigmore Hall
DESCRIPTION:In the first of his appearances this season Sergei Babayan takes on the challenge of the first 24 Preludes and Fugues of Bach’s 48. The pianist’s own fascination with Bach’s music led him to study with the great Bach authority and conductor Helmuth Rilling. Of his interpretations of the composer\, The Scotsman wrote: ‘One would be hard put to it to name a Bach interpreter of his standing today. His performance has a tonal spectrum many orchestras would envy’. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJohann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) \n\n\n\nThe Well-tempered Clavier Book I

SUMMARY:Playing with Music: Improvising through the Ages (Advanced\, Adults)

Improvising can be a liberating experience that develops many all-round musical skills – aural and listening\, creating\, interacting with other musicians – facilitating more spontaneous approaches to interpretation and music making in general. It is not essential to have previous experience in improvisation and the course is designed to work from the individual’s own level in a challenging\, but encouraging and supportive\, environment. Come and dare to do something different! It promises to be an exciting journey of musical self-discovery. \n\n\n\nWhat will we cover?\n\n\n\nRenaissance and Baroque embellishment practices; improvisation in the Classical period; traditional blues and jazz (harmonic structures and melodic improvisation); improvisation in contemporary classical contexts (including ‘intuitive music’) \n\n\n\nWhat will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…\n\n\n\nTo arrive at a point where you have the confidence to dispense with the written score and give flight to the imagination; to enhance your aural skills\, necessary in being able to hear internally what you are going to play/sing before you play/sing it\, and also in response to what others are playing/ singing.               \n\n\n\nWhat level is the course and do I need any particular skills?\n\n\n\nNo previous experience in improvising required. \n\n\n\nHow will the course be taught\, and will any preparation be required?\n\n\n\nTaught as a group\, but also with individual one-to-one work with the tutor. The class will be split into smaller groups (duos and trios) for some of the assignments. Tutor feedback (encouragement) given at every stage. \n\n\n\nFEES: \n\n\n\nRESIDENT: £453 (including room \n\n\n\nNON-RESIDENT: £345 (25% off for under 27s) \n\n\n\nThe fee for this residential course includes: Standard single accommodation (with hand basin and shared bathroom facilities)\, tuition\, use of relevant facilities and full board (including any hot beverages\, biscuits and cakes which might be served at break times).  \n\n\n\nSupplemental charges are payable for an en-suite room and for single occupancy of a double room. We offer a discount for clients sharing a standard twin/double bedroom. Please visit Terms and Conditions for current rates. \n\n\n\nA non-residential fee includes all of the above less accommodation and breakfast.

SUMMARY:Leif Ove Andsnes piano; Christian Tetzlaff violin @ Wigmore Hall
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating with a regular pianist partner\, the German violinist’s residency opens with a recital ranging from Dvořák’s late-Romanticism to the modernism of Bartók and Lutosławski. The former’s masterpiece was written for Jelly d’Arányi\, and premièred by her and the composer in London in 1922. Of tonight’s performers’ recording of the piece\, the BBC’s Andrew McGregor wrote: ‘As a duo they’re breathtaking\, with Tetzlaff soaring sweetly over Bartók’s gritty piano part’. \n\n\n\nWitold Lutosławski (1913-1994) \n\n\n\nPartita for violin and piano \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAntonín Dvořák (1841-1904) \n\n\n\nViolin Sonata in F Op. 57 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nINTERVAL \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBéla Bartók (1881-1945) \n\n\n\nViolin Sonata No. 1 BB84

There will be guidance for further reading and listening. \n\n\n\nWhat level is the course and do I need any particular skills?\n\n\n\nGrade 7 and above. \n\n\n\nHow will the course be taught\, and will any preparation be required?\n\n\n\nThe main body of the course consists of three or more individual lessons given by the tutor on the pieces each participant has prepared in advance. There will be the opportunity for general discussion. A later session of the course will be devoted to playing suitable duets provided by the tutor. Participants are also welcome to bring their own duets. The final session is a final informal concert which includes both solos and duets.  \n\n\n\nWill music be provided in advance of the course?\n\n\n\nParticipants should bring their own copies of the music which they intend to play on the course. A list of the complete repertoire being brought by everyone will be provided by Benslow Music in advance. Participants are invited to bring their own copies of those pieces too. Copies will be also be provided by the tutor. \n\n\n\nIs there anything I need to bring?\n\n\n\nJust yourself and your music! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFEES: \n\n\n\nRESIDENT: £453 \n\n\n\nNON-RESIDENT: £345 (25% off for under 27s) \n\n\n\nThe fee for this residential course includes: Standard single accommodation (with hand basin and shared bathroom facilities)\, tuition\, use of relevant facilities and full board (including any hot beverages\, biscuits and cakes which might be served at break times).  \n\n\n\nSupplemental charges are payable for an en-suite room and for single occupancy of a double room.
