Mahler, Schumann and Strauss
The Artist in Residence and his three string playing colleagues select sizable works from the piano quartet repertoire. Representing his only surviving chamber composition, Mahler’s early single movement (1876) dates from his period as a student at the Vienna Conservatoire. Another early work, in this case revealing the influence of Brahms on the young composer’s idiom, Strauss’s full-scale quartet (1885) was sadly almost the composer’s last for chamber forces.
